Xinyang "Alex" Shan represents Communication Studies at the CSU Research Scholarship and Creative Activity Showcase

"As an international student with a practical design background, I chose to apply to SJSU's MA in Communication Studies to deepen my academic experience. This program is a great way to learn about interdisciplinary research and improve my writing and research abilities. My project grew out of an idea I first explored in Dr. Haverfield's COMM 201 class in fall 2025, where I combined design and communication studies. Now, I’m so glad to present it in the RSCA Showcase. In addition, the Graduate Teaching Associate program and support from faculty at SJSU also gave me a chance to quickly gain the skills and practical experience as an instructor in the US, which has inspired me to pursue a future as an innovative scholar and educator."

About the program

The M.A. program in Communication Studies at San José State University is grounded in the theoretical and ethical foundations of communication studies; the modes of inquiry employed by communication scholars; and the practical application of these concepts and methods in professional and scholarly contexts.

We approach graduate study as an interdisciplinary exploration. Students are introduced to rhetorical, interpretive, quantitative, critical, and pedagogical frameworks.

Our curriculum is designed for new graduates, mid-career professionals, and those returning to school after a hiatus.

In addition to our seminar offerings, students may avail themselves of internships and study abroad programs, serve as research assistants, design their own independent studies, and complete an optional MA thesis/project for their culminating experience.

New and continuing students may gain experience teaching at the college level through our competitive Teaching Associate (TA) program.
