San José State ranked ninth nationwide among comprehensive universities for the number of students studying abroad for a full year, according to the 2008 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. The report is published by the Institute of International Education, the leading not-for-profit educational and cultural exchange organization in the United States. Other California State University campuses in the top ten in the same category include CSU Chico, San Francisco State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CSU Long Beach and CSU Sacramento.

Nearly three dozen San José State students are studying aboard during the 2008-2009 academic year with assistance from the CSU's Office of International Programs. On a related note, SJSU International and Extended Studies recently received a commendation from the city of San José for its work advancing international education by actively recruiting students and faculty from throughout the world, enriching the city and university community, and providing study abroad programs for its students at 150 universities in 40 nations.
