About Us
Federal TRIO Programs
The Federal TRIO Programs provide support services for individuals from marginalized backgrounds, including low-income students, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities. The goal is to increase access to higher education and promote academic success. There are eight TRIO programs in total, with two available at San Jose State University
*NOTE: Students are able to join both programs, but must apply separately. Getting into one program does not mean enrollment in the other.
TRIO (SSS) Program
The TRIO Student Support Services Program (SSS), is a federally funded program that aims to increase college retention and graduate rates among applicable undergraduate students. This program provides support and opportunities for students to complete postsecondary education.
At SJSU, we serve 260 students and take 50 new students every year. Enrollment is ongoing and is applicable for freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Main Purposes:
- Facilitates academic development
- Supports students in completing their postsecondary education
- Enhances retention and graduation rates of participating undergraduate students
SSS Student Benefits:
- One-on-one advising regarding academics and mentorship
- TRIO trips and activities to:
- Social Gatherings with lots of free food
- Graduate School Trips (for students looking into masters programs)
- Skill Workshops: career, financial, student aid, scholarships, and more
- Cultural trips: museums, plays, and historical sites
- Federal Aid Grant up to $1,000 for active and participating students that meet the
following criteria:
- Freshmen, Sophomore (less than 60 units), pell eligible.
TRIO (McNair Scholars) Program
The Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program at San Jose State University is an effort designed to encourage low-income individuals who are first-generation college students and/or marginalized in graduate education to pursue doctoral studies.

Main Purposes:
- Supports low-income, first-generation college students and those marginalized in graduate education
- Receive mentorship and research opportunities
- Increases attainment of a PhD for participating undergraduate students
Benefits:
- One-on-one advising regarding undergraduate research, graduate school, graduate applications, and connecting with other graduate students
- McNair TRIO trips and activities to:
- Graduate School Trips (for students looking into PhD programs)
- FREE Graduate Class: Tailored course to help undergrad students learn how to research, write academic papers, and better understand graduate school at a more, professional level
- Financial support for graduate school (for more information regarding financial support, please reach out to the head(s) of the SJSU TRIO McNair program)
- Is on a case by case basis
