Undergraduate Advising

All BME undergraduate students must see their Academic Advisor every semester before registering. Advising periods begin a few weeks before registration.

Information about Advising and about Departmental events is communicated through the departmental mailing lists (BME Undergraduates, BME Graduate Students, BME Alumni). All BME students are encouraged to join the appropriate mailing list.

Undergraduates need to bring a copy of all transcripts from other colleges attended the first time they see an advisor. (Yes, even though you already had your transcripts mailed to the University, you still need to bring in an unofficial copy to your advisor.) You will not be allowed to register if we do not have a copy of your transfer transcripts on file in the department office.

If you are planning a change of major please fill out this Change of Major application form.

How to Meet with Your BME Academic Advisor for Fall 2026

Note: this is the up-to-date information for students who have an advising hold for Spring 2027 and want it to be removed.

Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

  • The Spring 2027 class schedule will be posted on MySJSU in October 19.
  • The Registration Period for Continuing Students begins on October 27.

Step 1: Identify Your Assigned BME Academic Advisor

During the Fall 2026 semester, the undergraduate advisors are assigned based on the student’s last name, as listed below.

Junior, Senior and Graduate students can book an appointment with their designated advisor via Spartan Connect.

Step 2: Schedule an Advising Appointment via Spartan Connect

Advising appointments can be booked on Spartan Connect.

Please remember to cancel your current appointment if you are not able to make it, before creating a new appointment.

If you are not able to cancel your appointment or have difficulties scheduling an appointment on Spartan Connect, please contact  biomedical-engineering@sjsu.edu

Step 3: Prepare a Tentative Course Plan for Spring 2027

Identify the classes you are planning to take in Spring 2027. This is a starting point, and it will be further discussed and refined with your advisor.

It may be helpful for you to review the tentative schedule of the BME courses offered in Spring 2027.

Step 4: Complete and Submit the Spring 2027 Advising Form

Undergraduate students need to complete and submit their advising form for Spring 2027. You’ll be prompted to enter your information and your advisor’s. After that, you will be able to fill out a DocuSign form where you should indicate the classes you are planning to take in Spring 2027, and your anticipated workload. Please do that before you meet with your advisor, even if you are not sure about your plan, so when you meet your advisor already has a snapshot of your situation.

Step 5: Attend Your Scheduled Advising Appointment

This is the final step, in most cases. In Spartan Connect, you will learn if your advising meeting will be in person or via Zoom. If your meeting is on Zoom, you will have to use the Zoom link shared by your advisor in Spartan Connect. (SJSU authentication is required to log into the Zoom meeting.)
You will be placed in a waiting room until your advisor is ready to meet with you. It is possible that you may have to wait few minutes.

At the meeting your advisor and you will reach an agreement on the classes you will be taking in Spring 2027. At the end of the meeting, your advisor will remove your advising hold.

Please bring with you a copy of your Degree Roadmap where you have marked the classes you have completed and the classes in which you are currently enrolled.
