Community & Study Space

CAPISE is a fully-operational space in the Student Union! We have tables and a comfy sofa where you can study/take a break between classes and be in community with other students. You can also chat with our student and professional staff about any questions you might have about CAPISE services, events, and programs and/or about SJSU. 

Additionally, you can come by to access any and all of our resources:

  • On-campus and off-campus resource flyers
  • Testing supplies (big and small green books, variety of scantrons, manual/mechanical pencils)
  • Asian Pacific Islander (API) Resource Library (see section below)

API Empower Mentorship Program

The Asian Pacific Islander Empower Mentorship (API EM) Program is a new peer mentoring program for first-time, first-year (Frosh) undergraduate students connected to Asian and Pacific Islander experiences. The program started in Spring 2023, and we have had 3 cohorts of mentees and mentors complete the year-long program so far.

The API EM Program's mentee application for our 2025-2026 cohort is closed. We will be reaching out soon to let everyone who applied the status of their application.


Let’s Talk (Fall 2025)

CAPISE partners with SJSU's Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) to provide weekly drop-in hours with a staff from CAPS in our space for students to easily access. Students can use these drop-in hours to learn about how to access support, explore resources, provide perspective, and discuss how counseling could be helpful. Let’s Talk hours will begin on Tuesday, September 2nd.

  • Dr. Shikha Saggi, Weekly on Tuesdays from 11 AM - 12 PM

Study Abroad Advising (Fall 2025)

CAPISE partners with SJSU's Martin Luther King Jr. Library to provide biweekly drop-in library support in our space for students to easily access. Students can use these drop-in hours to learn how to navigate all the library resources and the support the library can offer for academic research. Library Resources/Support (Kakoʻo) drop-in hours will begin on Tuesday, February 11th.

  • Dr. Vidalino Raatior on the first Thursday of the month from 2 - 3 PM (9/4, 10/2, 11/6)

CAPISE Civic Chats (Fall 2025)

CAPISE partners with SJSU's Office of Community and Government Relations to provide monthly drop-in hours where students can come and talk about campus opportunities/initiatives, government and civil relations more generally, and networking and professional advice. CAPISE Civic Chats: Empower Drop-in Hours will begin on September 18th.

  • Nina Chuang, monthly on Thursdays, 11am - 12pm (9/18, 10/9, 11/13)

Career Center Counseling (Fall 2025)

CAPISE partners with SJSU's Career Center to provide drop-in career counseling in our space for students to easily access.

Career counseling drop-in hours will not be available for Fall 2025 due to staffing capacity. Our liaison, Sandra De Leon, is available for drop-in and scheduled appointments directly through the Career Center. More information about booking Career Center appointments here.


CAPISE Faculty Associate (Fall 2025)

CAPISE's Faculty Associate provides students the opportunity to build community with faculty outside of the classroom and for faculty to collaborate with CAPISE on research and projects that directly support API student success at SJSU. 

For the 2025-2026 academic year, Dr. Trung Nguyen, Assistant Professor in Asian American Studies, is CAPISE's Faculty Associate. He hosts weekly drop-in hours where students can come and talk to him about his research, their college experience, activism, Asian American experiences, feminist and queer perspectives, race and racism, grad school, and how to get comfortable talking to professors. He also is working on a project with CAPISE, the Asian American Tour of Resistance at SJSU (tentatively titled). Dr. Nguyen's office hours will begin on Monday, September 8th.

  • Dr. Trung Nguyen's Drop-in Hours, Weekly on Mondays from 1:30 - 2:30 PM

Asian Pacific Islander (API) Resource Library

Photo of bookshelf in CAPISE full of booksThe Asian Pacific Islander (API) Resource Library has a variety of books that reflect the diverse API community, ranging from fiction and poetry to nonfiction and autobiographies. SJSU community members are welcome to read our books while they are in the center or check out a book they’re interested in and borrow it for a one-month period. Our API Resource Library is located next to our front desk, near the entrance to our space. If you are interested in providing book recommendations or donating books to our library, please contact us at capise@sjsu.edu.
