Pre-registration and Reporting: Evidence and Innovations
Abstract: How well does preregistration address publication bias and
selective reporting in economics? In this talk, Dr. Fernando
Hoces de la Guardia will present results from two large-scale
projects investigating preregistration and reporting practices.
The first study standardizes and tracks thousands of
hypotheses from more than 300 preregistered studies in the
AEA RCT Registry, following them through subsequent
publications, working papers, and reports.
The findings reveal many hypotheses never appear in the
published literature—even years later—raising questions
about the limits of preregistration as a safeguard against
selective reporting.
The second study develops a minimal set of reporting
standards for economics and tests whether interventions can
improve compliance. By adapting practices widely used in
medicine and public health, this project explores pathways
toward more transparent and consistent research reporting.
Together, these papers shed light on the challenges and
opportunities of preregistration, while offering innovative
tools to improve the credibility and cumulative value of
economic research.
