60 Or More Earned Units
Students who have completed 60 or more units are not eligible to receive Change of Major (CoM) advising through ESSC.

Civil Engineering (CE)
- Students interested in changing to Civil Engineering must contact Dr. Olivia Yip at olivia.yip@sjsu.edu for CoM advising.
Computer Engineering (CMPE) and Software Engineering (SE)
- Students interested in changing to CMPE or SE should review the Department's Change of Major Policy webpage for requirements and instructions.
Mechanical Engineering (ME)
- Students interested in changing to Mechanical Engineering should review the Department’s Change of Major Policy webpage for requirements and instructions.

Instructions for All Other Engineering Majors
Students must contact the Department Chair or a designated departmental CoM advisor for the major they are interested in.
Departmental advising may include:
- Verification of good academic standing
- Completion of required coursework with specified grades
- Review of a projected graduation timeline using the MyPlanner “What If” feature
- Discussion of eligibility criteria, such as:
- Minimum GPA requirements
- Course completion timelines
- In some cases, submission of a formal academic plan
Decision Process
- The Department Chair or designated advisor will determine eligibility and communicate the decision directly to the student.
- If approved:
- The department will submit the Change of Major request on the student’s behalf.
- If a student has over 90 units, approval from the Associate Dean is also required.
Final acceptance is processed through Academic Records. Students should review MyProgress to confirm completion of the Change of Major process.

The Engineering Change of Major Policy Academic Guidelines apply only to lower division students (fewer than 60 units earned).
