Change of Major and Minor
Undeclared or Change of Major
If you are Undeclared and wish to declare Kinesiology as your major, or if you are
declared in another major and wish to Change Majors to Kinesiology, please review
the requirements listed below:
I. Minimum Change of Major to Kinesiology Coursework and GPA Requirements
Prospective change of major students must have a minimum of 24+ units (roughly two
semesters of coursework) completed at SJSU and must have two classes completed (minimum
grade of a C-) from the following areas prior to submitting a change of major request
to the Kinesiology (KIN) department:
| A |
B |
|
GE Area A3 or GE Area 1C (Pending GE catalog year rights; ENGL recommend)
|
BIOL 65 - Human Anatomy
|
|
KIN 70 - Introduction to Kinesiology
|
BIOL 66 - Human Physiology
|
|
GE Area C, D, or E; or GE Area 3A, 3B, or 4 (Pending GE catalog year rights)
|
CHEM 30A - Introductory Chemistry (CHEM 1A also acceptable)
|
II. Additional Suggestions and Reminders for Prospective Change of Major KIN Students
a. To be considered a competitive candidate, aim for a SJSU GPA of 3.1 or higher. Applicants
will not be solely evaluated on SJSU GPA; however, having a strong GPA will further
strengthen chances of acceptance.
b. The KIN department receives roughly 30 to 35+ change of major requests each cycle
and acceptance is based on completion of the minimum of two courses in Area A and
Area B, aggregate GPA for KIN major preparation/prerequisite courses, and overall
SJSU GPA. The KIN Department will review change of major applications holistically.
c. Avoid following the KIN 4-year roadmaps, which are designed for officially declared
KIN students, and instead prioritize completing the KIN major prerequisite/preparation
courses from Area A and Area B. Other KIN courses should not be completed prior to
getting the courses listed under Area A and Area B completed.
d. Building on point c., acceptance as a change of major to KIN is not a guarantee,
so the KIN Department strongly recommends meeting with your current major advising
team to develop a backup plan if your future change of major to KIN application is
not approved.
e. If accepted as a change of major to KIN, you will be placed on the KIN major requirement
catalog year that is consistent with your GE catalog year requirements (e.g. a student
following the 2024-2025 GE catalog year requirements will be placed on the 2024-2025
KIN Major catalog year requirements; a student following the 2025-2026 GE catalog
year will be placed on the 2025-2026 KIN major catalog year requirements, etc.).
III. Change of Major Application Deadlines
a. When filling out the Change of Major Application, be sure to download the below fillable
PDF to your desktop. Do not fill out the PDF via Google Docs to avoid formatting issues.
Applications with format issues or incomplete sections will not be accepted.
b. Under the “Semester, Year, & Grade” column, for previously-completed courses, list
the semester and year of completion (e.g., FA 25, SP 25, etc.) and the final letter
grade. For courses in-progress, as a place holder, list the semester and year followed
by IP (e.g., IP FA 26). It will be critical to update grades for in-process courses
prior to officially submitting an application.
c. Do not sign the application until requested via DocuSign.
d. Email your completed application as a PDF attachment to Daniel Bohigian directly
when nearing the application deadlines for the Spring and Fall semesters, respectively.
Change of major applications will not be reviewed until after the posted deadlines
below to allow time for final grades to process and SJSU GPA to be updated.
To be considered for the Spring semester: Once final grades from Fall have been published and posted to your MySJSU account,
email your complete application on or before January 10 by 11:59 PM.
To be considered for the Fall semester: Once final grades from Spring have been published and posted to your MySJSU account,
email your complete application on or before June 10 by 11:59 PM.
IV. Expected Application Review Turnaround
a. Within 14 business days after the application deadline, If accepted as a change of
major to KIN, you will receive a DocuSign request to sign your approved change of
major application. If denied, you will receive a Docusign request to sign your denied
change of major application to acknowledge the rationale for not being accepted.
NOTE: For students with 90+ total units completed, in addition to completing the KIN Change
of Major Application Application, you will be required to submit a separate College
of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) change of major form to be approved by the CHHS
Associate Dean.
b. Once the student signs the accepted KIN Change of Major Application, the KIN Department
will submit what is called an “advisor request” in the MySJSU system to get your major
officially changed to KIN. The process can take anywhere from one to three weeks after
initial acceptance as a change of major.
c. Once your major is officially changed, you will receive a confirmation email from
the Registrar’s office.
