Study Abroad

Please review the steps below for information about the study abroad process. Starting for the Fall 2025 semester, JHSSC Advisors will no longer be involved in the course equivalency process for study abroad students.

  1. Are you interested in studying abroad? Visit the SJSU Study Abroad website for information on Getting Started, including "How to Apply".

  2. Meet with Study Abroad Advising if you have additional questions about study abroad or away.

  3. When selecting the school abroad, research what types of courses are offered at that university.  For example:
      • Business courses - Core and Concentration
        • Only the appropriate Department Chair, Director, and/or course coordinator can review business course equivalencies for the major or minor.
        • ECON 1A, ECON 1B, MATH 70 and BUS3/PHIL 186 course equivalencies are reviewed by the appropriate department.
      • General Education (GE) courses
  4. Connect with a business advisor to discuss what courses are recommended to take abroad based on your concentration within business.
  5. Once you have been accepted to your study abroad program, refer to the Study Abroad Course Approval website for instructions on how to ensure your study abroad courses meet SJSU degree requirements.
      • Students need to complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF) Docusign form prior to leaving for their abroad program.
      • Keep track of all your study abroad documents (e.g. study abroad course equivalencies, academic approval forms) for your records in case you have questions for your business advisor.

  6. Go abroad! Enjoy your experience!

  7. Before returning home from your program, please review the Before Returning checklist from Study Abroad and Away to ensure a smooth transition back to life at SJSU.

  8. When you return, follow up with Study Abroad Advising to ensure your study abroad credit is accurately being reflected in MyProgress.
      • Study abroad transfer credit will not be posted unless all of the courses you took have been accounted for with a signed Academic Approval Form.
