Bio
Babe Kawaii-Bogue (she/they) is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work. Born and raised in Ramaytush Ohlone Territory (San Francisco) in the 80’s-90’s, she identifies as an American Descendant of Slavery, Kānaka Maoli, and Western European American by way of Canada.
She received her PhD in social work and psychology from the University of Michigan, an MA in clinical psychology from Teacher’s College Columbia University, and a BA in psychology from UC Berkeley. She spent seven years post-PhD as the Trauma, Grief and Loss Counselor working in the San Francisco Unified School District high schools through Richmond Area Multiservices (RAMS). She brings two years of experience as an Assistant Professor of Social Work from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, where she taught advanced practice courses in mental health and policy analysis and served as the faculty advisor for the Black Student Association.
Her research lies at the intersection of race and mental health, focusing on culturally appropriate mental health service delivery models, anti-racist practice, trauma/grief, racism/racial microaggressions, and clinical practice with Black, Indigenous, and multiracial communities. She is passionate about teaching mental health and policy classes to future social workers.
For fun, she enjoys playing soccer and has played in various leagues across a few states in the U.S. A vivid memory she has is playing soccer in Golden Gate Park in the early 90’s with Robin Williams' kids and meeting him with her mom. She also enjoys landscape photography, nature, and playing the violin. She is excited to be a part of the school and is looking forward to serving her students and community.
