Who is a Returning Student?
You are considered a returning student if you meet the following:
- Previously enrolled at San José State University in a degree-seeking program
- Have been away from SJSU for two or more semesters
- Not currently on a Leave of Absence or Educational Leave
Note: Students who only enrolled through Open University are not considered returning students for admission purposes and must apply through Cal State Apply.
How to Return to SJSU
The process may vary based on how long you’ve been away or your academic status. Please review the following criteria to identify which best fits you.
Eligibility Criteria
If the criteria below apply to you, you are eligible to complete the SJSU Returning Student Form:
- You are returning to complete your bachelor’s degree at SJSU
- You left SJSU in good standing or on academic notice
- You have not attended another college or university since leaving SJSU
- You did not only take Open University courses when you previously attended SJSU
- You are a Second Start student
Students meeting the criteria below should reapply via Cal State Apply:
- You are attempting to complete a bachelor’s degree
- You attended another college or university after leaving SJSU
- You only enrolled in Open University courses when you previously attended SJSU
- You are in good standing at all institutions attended since leaving SJSU
Readmission Deadlines
If You Were Academically Disqualified from SJSU
If you were academically disqualified from SJSU, you must:
Complete the reinstatement process as outlined on the Office of Undergraduate Education website and reapply to the University via Cal State Apply.
Note: Students who left SJSU in good standing and did not enroll for two or more consecutive semesters ("stopped out”) DO NOT need to submit a Reinstatement Petition.
