American Cultures GE
Through the American Studies Program, you can complete six of your general education requirements: 3A Arts; 3B Humanities; 4 Social Sciences; and US1 US History, US2 US Government, & US3 California Government. Together, these three courses give you a window into the complexity, beauty, diversity, as well as the problems, conflicts, and struggles that mark the peoples of the United States, how they create meaningful lives, how they live together or fail to live together, the potential and also the weaknesses of society in the US.
AMS 10 Stories that Make America (GE Areas 3B & US1)
AMS 11 Visions of Democracy (GE Areas 4, US2, and US3)
AMS 12 Intro to US Popular Culture (GE Area 3A)
American Studies is an academic field that uses a wide range of intellectual tools — from history to literature, sociology to art, environmental science to anthropology — to understand the many cultures of the United States, how they interact and overlap with each other, and their conflicts and differences. We also seek to understand the place of these US cultures in the hemisphere and in a broad global context
If you complete all three of these lower division courses, you will only need three
more upper division American Studies courses to complete a Minor in American Studies.
