Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation - Traditional

The Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation (LSTP) major provides a rich, rigorous, cross-disciplinary liberal arts program of study in education. We prepare ethical and social justice oriented teachers who create relevant and transformative educational experiences, attuned to students’ academic, racial, cultural, linguistic, social, and emotional needs.

This major, offered by the Department of Humanities, is designed for students interested in teaching in elementary school or middle school. LSTP satisfies San José State University’s requirements for a BA in Liberal Studies and is a program approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) for waiver of the subject matter examination (CSET for Multiple Subjects) required to earn a teaching credential.

  • Demonstrate the ability to describe and compare the roles, impacts and ethical implications of ideas, texts, social movements, contemporary situations, and creations of the human imagination.

  • Demonstrate skill in written and verbal communication, including argumentation.

  • Demonstrate the ability to identify, select, use and cite information sources appropriately.

• PLO #5

  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge in subjects taught in K-8 schools.

• PLO #6

  • Demonstrate understanding of how to engage and support learning for all K-8 students by creating lesson plans that use a variety of instructional strategies, resources and technologies to meet students’ diverse learning needs.

• PLO #7

  • Demonstrate understanding of how to create and maintain effective learning environments through reflection and through the development of lesson that promote student learning, reflect diversity and encourage constructive interactions among students.

• PLO #8

  • Demonstrate understanding of how to plan instruction and assess student learning by creating lesson plans that use formative and summative assessment data to plan, differentiate and modify instruction.
