AKD Honors Society

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is the International Honor Society of Sociology.

The AKD faculty advisor is Preston Rudy.

Requirements for AKD Membership

  • Be an officially declared Sociology major or demonstrate a serious interest in Sociology within an official program at San José State University
  • Be at least a junior
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.3 on a 4-point scale, and a 3.0 in the Sociology classes taken at San José State University
  • Have completed at least 12 units (4 classes) of Sociology at San José State University (Credit/No Credit classes do not count with the exception of classes taken in Spring 2020)

Application Information

The application deadline for Spring 2024 is March 6th. Applications received by the deadline will be forwarded to the National Office of AKD.

How to Apply:

Complete the AKD Application Form by March 6, 2024 and email a .pdf of your unofficial transcript to preston.rudy@sjsu.edu with the title, "AKD Transcript" by the application deadline.

By early April, you will receive an email informing you of your acceptance or if you will need to reapply at a later date. In 4-6 weeks, you will receive another email when your certificate, and any optional item you ordered, is ready for pick up in the department office.

Membership Cost

AKD Membership - $50.00 (required)  
Lifetime membership includes a one-year subscription to Sociological Inquiry. With your membership certificate, you will receive a form that must be mailed to activate the subscription.

AKD Honor Cord - $15.00 (optional) 
Proudly wear Alpha Kappa Delta colors at your Graduation!  The Honor cord is teal, double-twined cords, 58 inches long knotted in the middle with 5 inch tassels on both ends of each cord.

AKD Lapel Pin - $10.00 (optional)
Gold Metal with Black. Size is approximately 1/2 inch.
