Fire Safety
The university urges everyone to remain vigilant of fire and fire risks. All fires, even once extinguished, should be immediately reported to 911.
What to know
- Locations of fire extinguisher(s) in the workplace;
- The nearest emergency exit and stairs;
- The nearest fire alarm activation device;
- Fire hazards in the workplace: appliances, extension cords, electronic devices, storage, open flames, flammable materials.
What to do if there is a fire
- If it is a small fire, find the nearest fire extinguisher and follow the proper directions for use. Do so only if safe.
- Activate the nearest fire alarm.
- If the fire is too large, evacuate using the nearest exit. Do not use elevators.
- Ensure all persons in the vicinity are alerted to evacuate.
- Dial 911 to report the fire's location.
- Call FD&O at (408) 924-1990 to report the fire after calling 911.
Evacuation Procedures
- Do not panic; exit the area calmly and avoid creating a crush or stampede situation.
- Do not use elevators in case of power failure resulting in the elevators to stop functioning. Use the stairs if able.
- Evacution chairs are available for those experiencing mobility issues on stairs.
- Close all doors, but do not lock, to isolate and enclose the fire. This prevents the spread of smoke or fire while the fire department reports to the affected area.
- Assemble at your department's designated meeting location; do not re-enter the building unless instructed by safety personnel that it is safe to do so.
