Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease
What is Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)?
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common and manageable illness that typically does not require medical attention, but it is highly contagious. Symptoms may include fever, sore throat, and a rash on the hands, feet, or mouth.
What is the treatment for HFMD?
Stay well-hydrated and rest. For fever or discomfort, you may use over-the-counter medications such as Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen as directed.
While most cases are mild, symptoms may temporarily impact your ability to attend class or participate in activities. The virus typically resolves on its own. You can return to regular activities after fever has resolved.
Prevention
HFMD is highly contagious. To help prevent the spread:
- Practice good hand hygiene
- Avoid close contact with others when symptomatic
- Stay home when you are sick
