General Education (GE) Advising
For GE advising, please meet with a GE advisor in the College of Social Sciences Student Success Center , located at Clark Hall, Room 240.
Overview
Advisors assist students with questions about curriculum, course sequencing, and fulfilling requirements for graduation. We HIGHLY recommend students meet with their advisor at least once per semester. Majors are advised by professors assigned by student's last name. Advising is held during office hours either in person, via Zoom or by appointment. Please see below. Assignments and hours vary per semester.
Students should contact only their assigned faculty advisor for advising issues and inquiries.
If you are meeting an advisor to process university paperwork, please bring the following to your advising session:
- Appropriate forms
- Ex: change of major/minor, minor contract, substitution form, etc.
- All college transcripts
- this is especially important if you are a transfer student since we cannot view your records from the Registrar’s Office. It takes the Registrar at least 2 semesters to input the data into MySJSU.
- Additional paperwork that needs to be attached to University petitions
- Ex: transcripts, statement of purpose, doctor’s notes, etc.

Pre-Law Advising
If you would like additional information on applying to law school after completing your studies at San José State University, you may contact Dr. Dallas Augustine. Dr. Augustine is the Department of Justice Studies' designee to lead advising for the Legal Studies Minor. She also helps students find opportunities that suit their interests.
Contact Dr. Dallas Augustine if you are interested in declaring a Legal Studies Minor or if you have additional questions. She will be happy to consult with students about programs and personal goals. However, all department advisors can process the change of minor and/or graduation paperwork.
