KLA awards

About the A.S. Key Leader Award

Thank you for your interest in the A.S. Key Leader Awards! This award recognizes leaders who unlock possibility by empowering others, opening doors to opportunity, and driving meaningful change. Up to 12 students will be selected to receive the award and will be recognized at the 15th Annual SJSU Student Leadership Gala on Tuesday, May 5, 4:30-7 p.m., in the Diaz Compean Student Union Ballroom.

Please feel free to nominate yourself, a friend, or a classmate!

Qualifications:

  • Be fully matriculated: undergraduate students (6 units per semester) or graduate students (3 units per semester)
  • Have completed a minimum of 12 semester units
  • Have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5
  • Be in good standing with the University
  • Not a previous A.S. Key Leader award recipient

Requirements:

  • A completed nomination form by Friday, March 27th, 5PM
  • Completed application requirements by Friday, April 4th, 5PM
  • Four completed sections: Awards/Achievements, Activities & Organization Involvement, Leadership on Campus, Community Service/Philanthropy
    • One (1) Letter of Recommendation

Note: Letter of Recommendation can be from a fellow student, staff or faculty member. Letters should support your nomination and highlight the reasons you should be considered for the A.S. Key Leader Award. Please have your recommender email their letter to as-info@sjsu.edu with subject: A.S. KLA: NOMINEE - [LAST NAME, FIRST NAME] no later than Friday, April 3rd by 5 PM.

Important Dates:

  • Nomination Deadline: Friday, March 27th, 5PM
  • Application Requirements Deadline: Friday, April 3rd, 5PM (Letter of Recommendation by Friday, April 3rd, 5 PM)
  • Selected awardees will be notified via email. An invitation to the gala will be included: Friday, April 17th
  • Leadership Gala RSVP Deadline: Friday, April 17th
  • A.S. Key Leader awardees will be recognized at the SJSU Student Leadership Gala: Tuesday, May 5th

Students may be nominated by fellow students, faculty, staff and community

  2. Nominated student must complete the online nomination form no later than Friday April 3rd at 5:00pm. Nominees will complete four sections outlining the following (250-word limit per section):

  3. Letter of Recommendation Submit one for your nominee via e-mail. Letter of Recommendation can be from a fellow student, staff or faculty member. About the Student Leadership Gala

Honoring Those Who Make A Difference
The A.S. Key Leader awardees are recognized at the Student Leadership Gala, a campus-wide event in collaboration with Associated Students, Student Involvement and the Solidarity Network, celebrating the outstanding student leadership at San Jose State University.

This award recognizes leaders who unlock possibility by empowering others, opening doors to opportunity, and driving meaningful change.

Student Involvement:
Student Organization Awards

SJSU is home to over 450 Recognized Student Organizations. The organizations include fraternities and sororities, academic and honorary societies, cultural and religious groups, special interest organizations, and club sports. These organizations are where many Spartans develop leadership skills, find community, and create long-lasting friendships and memories that carry with them beyond SJSU. Both individual student leaders and their student organizations will be honored and celebrated for their purposeful contributions to SJSU and the greater community.

Solidarity Network

The Solidarity Network of SJSU is a coalition of student affairs centers fostering student leadership through multiple identities while establishing a social justice foundation. It is comprised of the students and staff of:

  • A.S. César E. Chávez Community Action Center
  • African American/Black Student Success Center
  • Chicanx/Latinx Student Success Center
  • Gender Equity Center
  • MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center
  • PRIDE Center
  • UndocuSpartan Student Resource Center
  • Wellness and Health Promotion

The Solidarity Network encourages collaboration between communities and advocates for institutional change.

Vice President of Student Affairs’ Award for Exemplary Leadership and Service

This honor will be awarded to an SJSU student (junior or senior standing) who has displayed exemplary leadership skills throughout their SJSU career.
