A.S. Campus Community Garden

What We Do
In 2014, the SJSU Campus Community Garden was established as a result of a student-led initiative. The garden was created to provide students a space to gain access to healthy food, learn about sustainable organic garden practices, environmental justice, and earn service learning hours.

Benchmarks
- Hosted and coordinated over 50+ food and environmental justice focused programs with over 2,500 participants.
- Collaborated with over 75 student organizations, campus departments and community organizations.
- Hosted and coordinated 450 volunteer days, 7,000 volunteers and 15,000 service hours.
- Annually, harvest and donate approximately 1,500 pounds of fruits and vegetables and donate it directly to the Spartan Food Pantry and food insecure students. Total approximate number of 12,000 pounds of food.
- Installed Dolores Huerta mural in July 2017 to promote diversity and inclusion of women and their contributions to social justice/activism.
- Developed and implemented the Garden Leadership Program in Fall 2021; since then have had 45 participants.
- Successfully advocated and implemented a 500k Universal Design Project (ADA accessible) as an effort to make food and environmental justice education accessible to all students of different abilities.
- Student-led installation of the Solar Panel system installed Summer 2019.
- Student-led installation of the Greenhouse installed Spring 2022.

Expanding garden operations for efficiency & increase sustainability practices
- EcoBlox for Underground water storage system
- Improving composting system. Purchasing a composter blower system with Solar Power and compost digester
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives
- Create welcome signs in different languages
- Invite and contract identity-based farmers for educational purposes and diversify plants in the campus community garden
Investing in cultivating the next generation of environmental justice advocates
- Increasing number of participants in Next Generation: Garden Leadership Program
- Invite well-known environmental justice speakers
Community Investment
- Provide opportunities to support and guidance to community organizations and nearby schools interested in implementing an urban garden
